National Umbrella Forum

In 2002 in conjunction with NCVO I ran the first ever benchmarking club for umbrella organisations in the voluntary and community sector. The aim of the forum was to provide busy chief executives with a simple tool that they could use to better understand how the running of their own organisation compared with others. 22 organisations joined the club, information and data about six topic areas membership, representation, setting standards, diversity, communication and measuring performance was collected and compared at six facilitated meetings.

Benchmarking has gone on to be a more widely used method of performance management in the sector as well as an accepted way of networking and sharing information about how well you are doing, and ideas for how to do it better.
